The loveliness of Quink
Isn't Parker's Quink ink just lovely when you water the lines?
I was reminded of this when someone posted a pen and wash on fb today.
This is black Quink. It separates into a gorgeous array of blues and browns when it gets next to water.(Just a little sketch from a magazine - on cartridge paper, dip-pen, black Quink and water wash)........

Abstracted
Feeling a little abstracted today.
I don't think I've posted this one yet..abstract painting using acrylic inks on canvas, 50cm x 40cm (20" x 16")
It's called "Universe Explained - Schematic"
I hope that's clear, then.

Picture this...
In print (virtually) -
The latest magazine from Paint My Photo
including my article on 'painting from photos creatively'
http://issuu.com/paintmyphoto/docs/newsletter_autumn_2013?e=5895411/4668459
Do have a look - leaving aside my effort, it's a colourful, interesting read, and includes some great demonstrations, as well as articles on painting and photography.

Back to the Drawing Board
I've been drawing again in the past couple of weeks.
Graphite on cartridge paper, mostly portraits.
Here's a rare one for me, in a photo-realistic style. I usually much prefer a drawing to look like a drawing rather than a photograph, but in this case, it's all about the photograph, self image and how others see us.I was lucky to be able to use two super photos, shared by Duncan Sawyer on the Paint My Photo website, for which I am immensely grateful.
Lorna Style
This one is more what I would call my natural style....There's another that I have posted on the Faces page (see above). Just for fun.
I hope you like them.

Cover Competition
Ken Bromley Art Supplies have short-listed my painting "Murano Bowls in Sunlight" for their cover competition this year. Hoorah!
There is a public vote on the short-listed works and the winner is selected from the top three by a panel of judges.
If you fancy having a look at the whole short-list - not all that short, there's 84 pictures! - then pop on over to
and vote for your favourites.
The one below is my entry.

The Benefits of Sharing
I have recently discovered the site Paint My Photo , where generous photographers from around the world share their images freely, for the inspiration of artists.I've made a number of pieces, and more than a few friends, as a result of joining this site. I do not make copies of photographs in paint. Where would be the sense in that? But I have been inspired by some of the images to create what I hope are imaginative, original paintings like this..........
Trees Interlace (with Moon) inspired by Craig Johnson. |
Flutterby inspired by Kathryn Smith |
I would encourage any artist or photographer to check it out. It's a wonderful community and a great resource.
